Lead Database Administrator
Own and modernize a diverse database estate across cloud and on-prem: set standards, strengthen reliability and security, and guide teams with hands-on expertise.
About the Role
CloudOps runs infrastructure and operations across a distributed team in Poland and India, spanning private cloud and public cloud (AWS, Azure), Windows/Linux platforms, and networking and security tooling. We are looking for a Lead Database Administrator to take end-to-end ownership of the database estate: someone who holds the full overview of every platform and instance we run, sets the standards the rest of the organization builds against, and makes sure those standards are actually being monitored and enforced in production — not just written down.
This is a senior, hands-on specialist role rather than a people-management position. You will not have direct reports, but you will be the technical authority the rest of CloudOps and application teams turn to on all things database — architecture, performance, security, and lifecycle.
Key Responsibilities
Own the full database estate
Maintain a complete, current overview of every database platform, instance, and environment across on-premises VMware and public cloud (AWS, Azure) — what exists, who owns it, how critical it is, and what state it's in.
Act as the single point of accountability for the database domain: when a question about databases comes up anywhere in the organization, you're the person who either knows the answer or knows how to get it.
Own the roadmap for database platform lifecycle — versions, end-of-support tracking, upgrades, and decommissioning.
Set and monitor standards
Define configuration, security, backup, and operational standards for supported databases and drive their adoption across teams.
Establish monitoring and compliance checks so deviations from standard are caught automatically rather than discovered during an incident or audit.
Own and continuously improve database-related runbooks, documentation, and governance artifacts.
Operate and improve reliability
Design and validate high-availability and backup strategy; regularly test restore procedures.
Lead performance tuning, capacity planning, and troubleshooting for production database workloads.
Own patching and version-upgrade planning across the estate, balancing risk against staying within support.
Automate and modernize
Drive automation of provisioning, monitoring, and routine maintenance tasks — moving the team away from manual, one-off work.
Evaluate and introduce tooling that improves visibility, self-service, and consistency across the database estate.
Collaborate and share knowledge
Work directly with application and development teams on schema design, query performance, and data-related incident response.
Act as a technical mentor to other engineers who touch databases day-to-day, without being their formal manager.
Represent the database domain in capacity planning, architecture reviews, and cross-team ceremonies.
Must-Have
5+ years of hands-on DBA experience, with demonstrated ownership of a database estate rather than isolated task work.
Strong production experience with MS SQL Server and PostgreSQL.
Experience with cloud-native/managed database services (Azure SQL, RDS, or equivalent).
Proven track record of defining and enforcing operational standards (backup, HA/DR, security, monitoring) across a multi-platform database environment.
Experience with performance tuning, capacity planning, and incident/root-cause analysis at production scale.
Infrastructure-as-Code experience (Terraform, Ansible) applied to database provisioning.
Comfortable operating in a mixed on-premises (VMware) and public cloud (AWS/Azure) environment.
Fluent English, spoken and written — this role works across Poland, Denmark, and India.
Nice to Have
Production experience with MySQL and/or MongoDB and/or DB2.
Exposure to compliance frameworks or regulated environments (GDPR, data sovereignty requirements).
What Success Looks Like in the First 6 Months
A documented, current inventory of the entire database estate with ownership and criticality mapped.
Published standards for at least the highest-risk platforms, with a monitoring mechanism showing where production deviates from them.
At least one meaningful automation win removing manual, repetitive DBA work.
